Employers look for the best candidates

  • Jul 10,2007 by Careers Nigeria

People tend to think that getting a job is restricted to ‘connections’. This might be so in some companies or a few instances. However, for over 90% of jobs today, recruiters are more interested in the quality of the candidates.

Recruitment on its own, is a very costly exercise. To arrange for screening candidates, conducting tests and interviews, trainings etc, employers have to make sure they get their money’s worth.

In the UK, recruitment consulting is a big business and it can be quite exhausive. Here in Nigeria, the trend is also looking that way. Due to the large number of applications received for several job roles (esp graduate jobs), its time consuming to sift through so many CVs.

Hence, recruiters have a maximum of 30 seconds to make a decision on if to keep your application aside for a detailed look later, amongst thousands of applications or to throw it into the bin.

In order to catch a recruiters attention, it cannot be overstressed that your CV must be professional and satisfy the following ‘C’s - the content is comprehensive, concise and correct, the format is clear, cutting-edge and clinical and the paper is crisp and clean.

According to this blog by Bayt.com, it needs to meet a few more ‘C’s: employers are basically looking for a certain level of Competence, Chemistry, Confidence, Character, Commitment, Charisma, Communication Skills and Capacity for Learning in all hires.
