I’ld like to say you people at careersnigeria are doing a good job. Really it’s wonderful considering the fact that your website is always readily accessible but considering the advertisement placed for the position of a Human Resource Officer by MTN on your site, efforts to get across for registration proves abortive. Hope something could be done about it.
Once again, i’ll say keep up the good work and Thank You.

      33. on 03 Apr 2008 at 7:57 pm33Toyin Adex

        Hi All,
I am not trying to condemn anyone, but to call all prospective employees to something very important and to offer a piece of advice.

When people make grammatical errors, they say, English is not our language, rather than to accept and make correction(s). Yet, it is the same English Language that was used to teach all subjects and courses in Colleges and Universities. Our goal after graduating from Colleges and Universities is to secure a career and live a rewarding life.
I am a frequent visitor of careersnigeria. Each time I read people’s postings, I feel sorry for Nigerian graduates. Sentence constructions, grammatical errors and blunders are so many. When prospective employers read some of the postings by potential employees, they feel discouraged. What comes to mind at that time is, if hired, what’s this individual going to offer.

Advice: Lets try and use dictionary when writing ( for vocabulary reason) and also type first on MS Word, as your errors would be underlined and then you can make corrections and let us read Magazines, Newspapers and Novels, these would help a lot.

I read sometimes ago when the CBN Governor said; Nigeria Universities Graduates are not hirable. Is he not saying the truth? SEE the postings, (2, 4,5,,8,14,17,28) you would agree with me. These are the reasons, why you see employers going after people who read abroad. Because, they believe they are better of.

        Good luck to y’all.

        Toyin, USA.

      34. on 04 Apr 2008 at 12:56 pm34Taiwo Adelakun

        Toyin,
Good advice. But dear, no one is devoid of errors, “you” inclusive. I trust that you have the best intent of every job seeker on this forum, but you should first modify every crack on your part, before you advocate perfect speech and/or writing.

Your last paragraph reads “sometimes ago…”. That phrase is “sometime ago”, without the letter ’s’ behind the word “sometime”.

Employers cast their nets for the ‘perfect candidate’, but really, who’s ever really without a grease? If one is inherently sound intellectually, he/she may lack moral integrity. Another may be “smart” for and on the job, but lack academic brilliance. I’m no better myself. Error is naturally intercoursed with man. It’s our make-up, no matter the education. I fall guilty, and so do you dear. Hence, if Employers keep seeking only “candidates who schooled abroad”, they may just as well take a trip to Heaven’s Gate to get the best of the lot. Because no one is perfect. But take out the grammer and pedigree, you’d realize that even the dullest of all, in the worst of ‘home-based schools’, still has something to offer. Question is, what does “you-inc” (You Incorporated) have to give?

I wish “us” all the best!
        Taiwo, (Thamesmead, London)

I agree with Taiwo that no one is devoid of errors. So Toyin before you complain about some peoples grammatical errors, you should try and check yourself. Note: it is ‘lets try and use a dictionary or the dictionary’.
As for the CBN governor, he is part of the people that are not giving Nigerian youths a chance. We have a lot of brains and talents out there but we are busy looking for expertraites to do the work. I wish them luck, but most of all I wish everyone looking for a job all the best in their search. Dont mind Toyin, some times it isnt all about the English but your ability to express and Defend yourself where ever you find yourself.
        God help us all.

        Thank You.

      50. on 07 Apr 2008 at 5:17 pm50Kola

this goes to toyin, the ever big mistake someone ever make is what toyin has just analize, when looking into grammatical aspect’ is not all the time people has that time to wait and check the gramma they inplement. when posting a comment does not mean>>> you should review a dictionary before posting, speaking gramma does not mean you are better anyway if companies are looking for English titrater only, the company will soon cratch becauese alot of people are there>> they are very good in gramma but in technical aspect their very poor. i believe that gramma is the reason why they refuse to employ you company know what they want and they determine what they need . talking about Nigeria universities student, they have something uptair to dowload than student in abroad, as a person i study Telecommunication in (Rochester University, Florida, USA) and i still come down to Nigeria to finish my master degree in University of Ibadan and i have work with many international company e.g michrotech industrial limited USA, P&G, Gillete, vodafone. i enjoy study in nigeria. Toyin stop saying scrap becuase you are fortunate to study in abroad, instead of encourage Nigerian student you are lamenting. anyway if you have anything to sujourn or prove kindly refeer to my mail>>>>>>>>. joseph_kola2003@yahoo.com my prayer for everyone is to get good job and God know waht he had ordain for you.

        Hey Akinlosotu & Tolulope,

Do not crucify me please. I commented on what I saw and read.
I am not trying to bring anyone down. I only made an observation. I am a Nigerian to the core. I also read in Nigeria, before I traveled out. Just piece of advice for our graduates in Nigeria, who are looking for gainfull employment within Nigeria economy. Sorry o, if anyone has been offended. I am not looking for an opportunity in Nigeria!!!

      57. on 11 Apr 2008 at 1:22 am57Papalolo

        To Toyin Adex
While others ar crucifying you, I have to praise you for your advice. If I am going to employ anybody in my company or I need somebody to be my business partner, I would take you anyday. The problem with some Nigerian graduates is that they don’t like to be corrected, most especially if you happened to be living abroad. What Toying have done is simple advice to applicants that they should mind their language. We all make mistakes and not immune to occasional flip. However, a look on what are being posted on this site is below what is expected of graduates.

We are all Nigerians to the core.

Toyin, do not be dismayed, continue to advice and speak your mind.

      58. on 11 Apr 2008 at 8:07 pm58Kola

Yes advice is good but nobody is perfect. let company complain this problem first. before you make a coment. papalolo that mean if you have a company you can easily be convince by gramma. if you go through what you send to this forum you will see that you have commit a blonder hahahaha are you born of blonder?

        Hi Guys,
I love all the arguements you guys have put forward concerning grammatical errors on comments by graduate applicants on this page. You guys are simply wonderful. One thing is certain though, that Nigerian graduates can never be pushovers anywhere in the world.Whereever they find themselves and, in whatever circumstances, they have always held their own, proved their mettle and compared favourable with any of their counterparts worldwide.Kudos to Toyin for that wonderful observation and, to Akin,Tolu,Kola and the other guys on the divide,”nough respects”, as some people would say, for their superb defense. One beautiful thing about the NET is that it provides you a fantastic opportunity to meet people, learn, share, and interact. You never know who is reading and you never know who could be of help, especially if you are an applicant. That is why one cannot afford to make mistakes. You are looking for a job, you have 2-1,2-2 or 3rd class, there’s need for you to sell yourself, let people know you, know what you have upstairs and what you can deliver. The NET provides you with the opportunity. It is a great marketing tool to advertise oneself, showcase one’s ability, make people appreciate you.The difference between companies that declare huge dividence at yearends and those that are not is really a thing one-advertisement or marketing.Ask Glo or MTN in Nigeria and they will tell you.You simply cannot afford to make mistakes doing that because it’s also one of the reasons why those that are gettin the jobs are getting them. Please let’s put sentiments aside and do the right thing,’coz you never know, your potential employer might just be reading your piece right now and the impression you create even by your responses-nature and type- could go along way in telling him who you are.It is simply the truth of the matter. Thanks and best of luck to you all.
